Andres Algaba is an assistant professor at the Data Analytics Lab of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). He studies how artificial intelligence changes the way we do science and what we discover: how large language models can speed up science and innovation, how they reason, and whether the tests used to evaluate them measure what they claim. He leads a project on the rate and direction of automated science in OpenAI's Economic Research Exchange, holds a Francqui Start-Up Grant, and is a board member of the Young Academy of Belgium. Before turning to language models, he worked on algorithmic fairness and text-based economic forecasting. He holds a joint PhD from VUB and Ghent University.

Andres Algaba is professor aan het Data Analytics Lab van de Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). Hij onderzoekt hoe artificiële intelligentie verandert hoe we wetenschap bedrijven en wat we ontdekken: hoe grote taalmodellen wetenschap en innovatie kunnen versnellen, hoe ze redeneren en of de tests waarmee ze beoordeeld worden echt meten wat ze beweren te meten. Hij leidt een project over het tempo en de richting van geautomatiseerde wetenschap in het onderzoeksprogramma Economic Research Exchange van OpenAI, is titularis van een Francqui Start-Up Grant en is bestuurslid van de Jonge Academie. Voordat hij zich op taalmodellen toelegde, werkte hij aan algoritmische eerlijkheid en economische voorspellingen op basis van tekst. Hij behaalde een gezamenlijk doctoraat aan de VUB en de Universiteit Gent.

- Board member of the Young Academy of Belgium, member since 2024 and board member since 2025.
- Part of the VUB Generative AI Agenda across research, education, and administration, 2023 to 2025.
- Member of the ad hoc working group on generative AI in education of the Flemish Interuniversity Council (VLIR).
- Co-organiser of the Ada Lovelace Algorithmic Lectures at the Data Analytics Lab, with guests including Desi R. Ivanova, Sam Klein, and Thilo Hagendorff.
- Co-creator of the monthly Economic Policy Uncertainty index for Belgium.
- Academic AI expert for the Flanders AI Academy (2023) and ambassador for PyTorch Lightning.
- Regular open-source contributor of code and data on GitHub and Zenodo.
